Without question good water movement and flow is one of the most important considerations in setting up any marine aquarium. Having good water movement is key to having a great looking and healthy aquarium, and not having adequate water movement in your aquarium can lead to a several potential problems.
The benefits of having good water movement are:
• Increased oxygen levels through improved water movement at the surface.
• Food and nutrients are carried to all the tank inhabitants and corals.
• Waste is carried away from all the tank inhabitants and corals.
• Helps with the photosynthesis and calcification processes of corals.
• Helps prevent the build-up of detritus (dead particulate organic material).
• Helps to create a more natural environment for all your tank inhabitants.
• Can help to prevent some types of marine algae from getting a foothold in your aquarium.
Other problems you could have if water movement is not adequate:
• Excessive nitrates and phosphates from allowing detritus and waste to build up and remain in dead spots.
• May create ideal conditions for pathogenic bacteria to grow – this is the bacteria that causes infections in fish and corals.
• Slow growth in corals.
• Ineffective or reduced biological filtration from your live rock.
• Ineffective or reduced filtration from your skimmer - or other forms of filtration.
Increase Water Movement for Healthier Corals & Fish! The Macro Aqua Flow Swing wavemaker is designed to create a dynamic water flow in any aquarium— helping to eliminate dead spots. The motor in the Flow Swing continuously moves the diffuser from side-to-side, changing the direction of the filtered water. This type of water flow is best to use when creating the typical conditions found at depths in the ocean of less than 40 feet. This is the best type of flow to have in a reef tank as coral reefs will have waves passing over them almost all the time. The motor in the Flow Swing continuously moves the diffuser from side-to-side, changing the direction of the filtered water. The speed at which the diffuser moves from left-to-right is about 5 seconds, where-as the right-to-left motion is about 10 seconds. This 100-degree oscillation variance creates wave-type currents which help sweep away excess detritus and waste products, and the automatically changing side-to-side sweeps create natural waves, stimulating growth and carrying nutrients to corals and plants.
Lastly, installing the Macro Aqua Flow Swing is a breeze! The inlet on the Flow Swing is adjustable by either using the included PVC adapter or the hose barb fitting—making it easy to connect to the return water line from the aquarium filter and the completely sealed submersible motor provides quiet, maintenance-free operation. And don’t forget, wavemakers are great in freshwater aquariums too!
